Fiji’s Minister for Health and Medical Services has declared an HIV outbreak after 1,093 new cases were reported from January to September 2024.

The rapid increase shows how fast HIV is spreading in communities.

To respond, the Ministry has launched two major plans. A 90-day HIV Outbreak Response Plan will focus on urgent actions to control the outbreak, while the HIV Surge Strategy 2024-2027 will guide long-term efforts to improve health systems and fight HIV effectively.

The Minister highlighted that the outbreak is being worsened by the ongoing drug epidemic and stressed the need for immediate action to protect Fijians.
