Port Vila is mourning the loss of a young hero, 13-year-old Peter Morris David, who tragically passed away after saving his family during a devastating earthquake on Tuesday, December 17.

Peter had gone into town with his family for Christmas shopping, unaware that the day would take a heartbreaking turn.

At 12:47 PM, a powerful earthquake struck, leaving destruction in its wake.

Separated from his father and sister, Peter was trapped inside the collapsed Billabong building alongside his mother and another sister.

Despite being pinned under heavy cement blocks, Peter showed incredible courage and strength.

Using a phone, Peter calmly called his father, providing vital updates about their situation.

His clear instructions and bravery guided rescuers to his mother and sister, saving their lives.

Even as his injuries worsened, Peter continued to focus on his family’s safety, refusing to let his own pain distract him from helping others.

Sadly, his heroic actions came at a great cost. Peter succumbed to his injuries before being reunited with his father.

His final words were filled with love and longing to see his dad.

On Thursday night, Peter's body was brought back to his home village of Utanlang, Nguna, where the community gathered to honor his bravery.

Peter’s selflessness and sacrifice have left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Rest in peace, Peter.
