16 people in Egypt are found missing after tourist boat sinks in Red Sea.

According to the Egyptian authorities, 16 people including 12 foreign nationals are missing after the boat sank off at Egypt Sea Coast.

This sea boat was carrying at least 44 individuals in which 31 were tourists and others were crew.

Reaching the top of the Marsa Alam, the passengers were asked to rescue themselves, however, it was confirmed that only 28 people were extricated with minor injuries.

Mr. Amr Hanafi, the Red Sea Governor, suggested reports saying that huge wave struck the boat, capsizing it just within 5 to 7 minutes.

He added, few passengers were allocated in their cabins, leading them not being able to escape.

The governorate distressed that call was received around 5:30am local time, via the boat, which had left from Porto Ghalib in Marsa Alam on Sunday with preparation to return to Hurghada Marina after spending 5 days.

Egyptian military frigates and aircraft cleared the area in search of the lost individuals, however, by 5pm the search took a break for the night.

Mr. Hanafi said that Egypt was collaborating with embassies, consulates and relevant professionals to ease the documentation for the saved passengers, who are currently lodged at a hotel in Marsa Alam and to assist with their basic needs.

Britain’s foreign office said that its providable consular aids a number of British nationals and the family members following an incident in Egypt and are in engagement with local authorities as well.

The Red Sea is a popular diving destination, known for its coral reefs and marine life and is essential for the tourism industry.

Mr. Hanafi added that the boat likely sank near the Sataya Reef, without giving further details.

He added, a technical review confirmed no faults with the boat, which had passed a certificate its last inspection with Maritime Authority in March 2024.

This is the second boat to sink in the area this year.
