Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Hon. Professor Biman Prasad has signalled a shift in government spending priorities, saying the upcoming 2025–2026 National Budget will focus on efficiency, service delivery, and stronger collaboration with the private sector.
Speaking at the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Forum, Professor Prasad said the Coalition Government is committed to building a resilient and inclusive economy while ensuring that public funds are used responsibly.
“Our 2025–2026 Budget will focus on delivery and efficiency of public services. In partnership with the private sector, we’re building a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous Fiji,” he said.
Professor Prasad noted that while Fiji’s economy has experienced steady growth in recent years, the government is now moving away from stimulus-driven spending toward more prudent fiscal management.
“The time for spending to revive the economy is over. The government must now spend more carefully. The public must see value in the money we spend,” he said.
Acknowledging concerns over the high cost of living and inflation, the Finance Minister said the government is aware of the burden facing families and businesses.
“Families are feeling the pinch. We are listening, and we are taking action,” he said, adding that support and relief measures will be integral to the new budget.
He also reaffirmed the government’s openness to private sector investment and dialogue.
“We are not here to make fancy announcements. We are here to work with you,” he told business leaders.
Professor Prasad said that nationwide consultations, including with organisations such as the Nadi Chamber of Commerce, are vital to shaping a budget that reflects public priorities.
“We want a transparent, responsible, and responsive government. That is our promise to the people,” he added.
The Ministry of Finance is expected to announce the 2025–2026 National Budget in June.
