A 24-year-old man is set to appear in Suva Magistrates Court today after being charged with the murder of a 25-year-old man outside the Suva Harbour Centre on Saturday.

According to the police, the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim during a dispute.

The victim was quickly rushed to Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he was treated but later died from his injuries.

The accused man has been charged with one count of murder.

When asked about the police presence and patrols in the area, Chief of Operations, ACP Livai Driu, explained that while officers are deployed throughout the city, they cannot be in every location at once due to the large area they cover.

ACP Driu also spoke about the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully, saying police always encourage people to avoid violence.

He mentioned that the initial investigation suggests the incident was alcohol-related, with the argument escalating due to alcohol consumption.

The Chief of Operations reminded the public that alcohol-related incidents tend to increase during the festive season, and he urged people to be responsible with their drinking.

He warned that over-indulging in alcohol can lead to harm, and in some cases, as seen in this tragedy, even loss of life.
