Authorities in north-west Nigeria are searching for 25 schoolgirls who were abducted during an overnight attack on a boarding school in Kebbi State.

The gunmen reportedly entered the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga town at around 4 a.m., breaking through the school’s fence before storming the dormitories.

The school’s vice-principal was killed during the attack, trying to protect the girls.

Students were taken by armed men who fled on motorcycles. Security forces, including the army and police, have launched a major search operation across nearby forests and villages in an effort to locate the girls.

School officials said one student managed to escape shortly after the abduction and has been safely reunited with her family.

No group has claimed responsibility, but kidnappings for ransom remain common in the region, especially targeting rural or poorly protected schools.
