45 Street Dwellers Begin New Chapter Through Government Skills Program
FIJI NEWS

A total of 45 street dwellers have embarked on a new chapter in their lives today at the Fiji National University (FNU) Namaka Campus, as part of a government-led initiative aimed at building brighter futures through skills training.
The individuals are participants in the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ Easter on the Park program, which seeks to provide vulnerable citizens with practical skills that can lead to sustainable employment.
Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, said the program reflects the Coalition Government’s commitment to real, inclusive progress.
“Your Coalition Government is getting things done – not just talking about it,” Saukuru said.
Among the participants are:
7 future barbers
20 tour guides in training
18 bakers and pastry chefs
“These young people are now receiving proper training in their chosen fields, thanks to this government-led initiative,” Saukuru added.
He also announced that the government, through the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development, is working to build a safe house to provide accommodation and support for the trainees as they prepare for long-term employment.
“For too long, people like them were ignored. But your Coalition Government is changing that. We are here to support, empower, and uplift everyone — no matter where they come from,” said Saukuru.
He concluded with a strong message of hope and determination:
“We believe in second chances. We believe in action — not excuses. And we believe that everyone deserves hope and opportunity.”
“Let’s move forward together.”
