Ninety Fijian workers have been encouraged to carry the hopes of their families and the pride of the nation as they depart for Australia under the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme.
Speaking at a farewell ceremony, Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations Minister Agni Deo Singh commended the group for their commitment to improving their futures and supporting their families through overseas employment.
The departing cohort includes 57 new workers and 33 returning workers, who will take up roles with 15 approved employers across the meat works, hospitality, and agriculture sectors in Australia.
Minister Singh said the opportunity reflects the strength of the Fiji–Australia labour partnership and the growing demand for Fijian workers.
“Today is not just another farewell. It is a moment filled with pride, hope, and emotion,” he said. “As you leave our shores, you carry more than your belongings; you carry the hopes of your children, the prayers of your parents, and the dreams of your communities.”
He noted that the workers were selected from thousands of applicants and urged them to make the most of the opportunity, saying their efforts abroad would directly support their families and communities through remittances.
According to the Minister, about 5,500 Fijians are currently working in Australia under the PALM scheme, sending home an average of AUD $1,300 per month.
While highlighting the benefits of overseas employment, Singh also warned of the emotional challenges workers may face and encouraged them to stay focused on their long-term goals and family responsibilities.
He reminded the group to uphold Fiji’s values of respect, humility, and discipline, and to understand their workplace rights and responsibilities while abroad.
“You are not just workers; you are ambassadors of our nation,” he said. “Your success will open doors for future generations of Fijians.”
The Minister wished the workers safe travels and a successful employment journey on behalf of the Government and the people of Fiji.
