Rabuka Reaffirms Commitment to Media Freedom Ahead of Pacific Media Summit

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to media freedom and freedom of expression ahead of his address to participants of the 8th Pacific Media Summit in Savusavu.

Rabuka said media freedom and freedom of expression are fundamental to a functioning democracy, describing them as the “oxygen of democracy.”

The Prime Minister also reflected on his 2023 address to Parliament, when the Government repealed the Media Industry Development Act.

He said the repeal delivered on the Government’s commitment to restore media freedom in Fiji.

“We promised to restore media freedom. We kept our word,” Rabuka said.

His comments come as media professionals and stakeholders from across the Pacific gather in Savusavu for the regional summit.

The Pacific Media Summit provides a platform for media organisations and journalists to discuss issues affecting the industry, including press freedom, freedom of expression and the changing media environment.

Rabuka is expected to address participants during his visit to Savusavu.
