Cabinet Backs Staged Redevelopment of CWM Hospital

Cabinet has endorsed a staged redevelopment of the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital campus, putting plans for a proposed new National Tertiary Hospital at Valelevu on a different pathway.

The decision follows consideration of a Preliminary Master Plan which estimated the Valelevu hospital would cost around FJD $5.35 billion, including approximately $1.4 billion for the first stage.

Cabinet said the scale of the required investment, combined with limited financing commitments, made redevelopment of the existing CWM site a more practical option.

The staged approach will allow critical hospital infrastructure to be upgraded progressively while health services continue operating.

It will also spread the investment across multiple government budget cycles and provide more time to secure support from development partners.

Planned investments in oncology and radiotherapy services at the CWM campus will also be integrated into the redevelopment.

The Government will now proceed with the Feasibility Study and Business Case based on the staged redevelopment model, with the aim of strengthening Fiji’s national tertiary healthcare infrastructure over time.
