Fiji, Cook Islands Deepen Bilateral Cooperation

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has welcomed the newly appointed Cook Islands High Commissioner to Fiji, Michael John Henry, during a meeting focused on strengthening relations between the two Pacific nations.

Discussions covered opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, investment, tourism and labour mobility, including through the existing Memorandum of Understanding on Development Cooperation.

Prime Minister Rabuka also acknowledged the contribution of Fijians living in the Cook Islands and welcomed the appointment of Fiji’s first Honorary Consul to the Cook Islands.

The leaders also discussed shared regional priorities, including Pacific unity, climate action, access to climate finance and ocean priorities.

The meeting comes ahead of the Pacific Pre-COP31, which Fiji, Tuvalu and Australia will co-host from October 5 to 8.

Fiji and the Cook Islands established diplomatic relations in 1998, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to closer cooperation.
