Pacific Urged to Carry Strong Climate Message Ahead of COP31

Pacific leaders and international delegates have gathered in Fiji for Pre-COP31, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka calling for a strong and united message on protecting communities, livelihoods and the ocean from the worsening impacts of climate change.

Speaking during the traditional welcome ceremony at the Sheraton Hotel on Denarau Island, Rabuka said the discussions were ultimately about protecting lives, communities, reefs and nations increasingly exposed to a changing climate.

Delegates will travel to Tuvalu today to witness firsthand the challenges faced by Pacific communities, including king tides, saltwater intrusion and growing pressure on people’s ability to remain on their land.

Rabuka stressed that the Pacific was not asking for sympathy, but for the world to recognise that rising seas, warming oceans, water insecurity and threats to food security are global challenges.

He highlighted three key priorities: keeping the 1.5-degree goal within reach, ensuring climate finance reaches communities most in need, and giving the ocean greater prominence in global climate negotiations.

Rabuka also encouraged delegates to embrace the Pacific spirit of talanoa through open and honest dialogue, respectful listening and a focus on practical solutions.
