Natabua Alumni Congratulates Dr. Michael
The Natabua High School Alumni Association has congratulated Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change Dr. Sivendra Michael for his key role in Fiji’s move towards establishing an international carbon market, following the launch of Government’s FJ$5.2 million Five-Year Costed Carbon Market Plan 2026–2030.
The plan was launched during the Pacific Pre-COP31 in Nadi and sets out the systems Fiji needs to participate in international carbon markets, with the country aiming to complete its first international carbon trade by 2030.
Dr. Michael has been closely involved in the development of Fiji’s carbon market framework, including earlier work on the National Carbon Market Strategy Roadmap.
The Alumni Association acknowledged Dr. Michael’s contribution towards advancing this work and congratulated him on the significant milestone.
The newly launched plan could help Fiji attract climate finance for renewable energy, sustainable forestry, waste management and the protection of forests, mangroves and other natural ecosystems.
It also places communities and resource owners at the centre of Fiji’s approach, with emphasis on fair benefit sharing, safeguards and resilient livelihoods.
The launch represents another step towards turning Fiji’s carbon market policy and technical work into an operational framework, with Fiji targeting its first international carbon trade by 2030.
