Final push urged as seasonal kawakawa and donu ban nears end

Fiji is entering the final weeks of the seasonal ban on kawakawa and donu, with the public urged to continue supporting the conservation measure until it ends on September 30.

The national seasonal closure runs from June 1 to September 30 each year and is aimed at protecting the two reef fish species during their peak breeding period.

Authorities say the closure provides kawakawa and donu with an opportunity to breed and supports the recovery and sustainability of Fiji’s marine resources.

The ban is also a legal requirement under Regulation 4 of the Offshore Fisheries Management Regulation.

Members of the public are being reminded not to catch, keep or trade kawakawa and donu during the closed season.

Fisheries stakeholders are calling on communities, fishers and consumers to respect the remaining weeks of the ban and help protect Fiji’s marine resources.

The public is also encouraged to share information about the seasonal closure to raise awareness and promote sustainable fishing practices.

Authorities say continued compliance with the ban will help ensure Fiji’s fisheries remain productive and available for future generations.
