Government, Deaf Association Push for Greater Inclusion in Fiji

The need to improve access to information, services and opportunities for Fiji’s Deaf community has been highlighted during discussions between Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran and representatives of the Fiji Association of the Deaf (FAD).

FAD has called for greater national recognition of Fiji Sign Language, along with updated sign language resources and more accessible communication materials, including videos and posters.

The association also raised the importance of expanding basic sign language education in schools and improving the sign language capabilities of Government officials and service providers.

Such measures, FAD said, would help remove communication barriers faced by Deaf people when accessing education, healthcare, employment and social protection services.

Minister Kiran acknowledged the association’s advocacy and called for closer cooperation between Government, schools, tertiary institutions, employers, disability organisations, the media and communities.

She said greater understanding of Deaf culture and communication needs was essential to building a more inclusive Fiji.

The discussions come ahead of International Week of Deaf People, which will be observed from 21 to 27 September 2026.

Plans for the week include a broader national awareness campaign involving schools, tertiary institutions, employers, Government agencies and communities. Media activities, sign language videos and a planned march in Suva are also expected to form part of the awareness efforts.

Minister Kiran also stressed the importance of parents and families of Deaf children learning sign language as early as possible.

She said early access to communication could help ensure Deaf children receive the education, support and opportunities needed to participate fully in society.

The Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to working with FAD and other stakeholders to strengthen accessibility, inclusion and equal opportunities for Deaf people throughout Fiji.
