Mariners Urged to Exercise Caution as Heavy Swells Approach

Mariners Urged to Exercise Caution as Heavy Swells Approach

Mariners, boat operators and coastal communities are being urged to exercise extreme caution as damaging heavy swells are expected across several parts of Fiji from later Saturday.

A Damaging Heavy Swell Alert is in force for the Yasawa and Mamanuca waters, Southwest Viti Levu waters, Kadavu Passage, Koro Sea and Southern Lau waters.

The Fiji Meteorological Service says a high-pressure system located far southwest of Fiji is expected to generate and direct heavy southwesterly swells over Fiji waters.

Swell heights of up to four metres are expected over open waters, with wave periods of up to 16 seconds.

The conditions could create hazardous marine conditions, particularly for smaller vessels and those operating close to exposed coastal areas.

Mariners and boat operators in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary travel in dangerous conditions.

Coastal communities are also encouraged to remain alert and monitor weather updates as conditions develop.

The public is advised to follow all safety instructions and continue monitoring updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service.
