Government Staff Told to Put Public Interest First

Government employees in the Fisheries and Forestry sectors have been urged to place public interest at the centre of their work and ensure state resources are used responsibly.

Acting Permanent Secretary for Fisheries and Forestry Saimone Tauvoli delivered the message during his official tour of the Northern Division, which began at Macuata House in Labasa.

Speaking to staff from both sectors, Tauvoli emphasised that government resources are funded by taxpayers and must therefore be managed with the highest level of accountability.

“Things given to you are not yours,they are for the people of Fiji,” he said.

He called on staff and managers to ensure government assets are fully utilised and that projects are delivered without unnecessary delays.

Tauvoli pointed to the Ministry’s budget utilisation of more than 90 percent last financial year, while stressing the need to maintain efficient spending and avoid leaving vehicles, vessels and other resources idle.

He also encouraged closer cooperation between the Fisheries and Forestry divisions, including the sharing of transport, marine vessels and technical expertise to improve services throughout Vanua Levu.

Innovation was another key focus, with staff encouraged to contribute ideas and take part in performance assessments as part of the wider civil service reform programme.

The Northern Division tour will include strategic discussions and inspections of ministry facilities before culminating in the 2026 Farmers Awards at Subrail Park, where agriculture, fisheries and forestry producers will be recognised for their contributions.

Tauvoli said effective public service depends on integrity, teamwork and ensuring government resources deliver tangible benefits to communities.
