Pacific Agencies Unite in Suva to Combat Fisheries-Related Crimes

Regional law enforcement and maritime agencies have joined forces in Suva for a week-long training focused on tackling high-risk vessels, illegal fishing and fisheries-related crimes across the Pacific.

The “High Risk Vessels and Fisheries-Related Crimes in the Pacific” training brings together officials from Fiji, Tonga and Palau to strengthen regional cooperation and improve responses to maritime threats.

Fiji participants include representatives from the Fiji Police Force, Republic of Fiji Navy, Ministry of Fisheries, Fiji Ports Corporation Limited, Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji and Fiji Immigration.

The training is organised by INTERPOL Headquarters, with support from Germany through the International Climate Initiative under Project GAIA.

A key component of the programme was a practical vessel boarding exercise at the Port of Suva, focusing on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Participants were able to apply procedures used to identify high-risk vessels and check compliance with national laws and international maritime requirements.

The programme also focuses on strengthening cooperation in responding to serious organised crime and other criminal activities linked to the maritime sector.

Support from the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency** has further contributed to the training and regional capacity building.

The initiative highlights the importance of coordinated action among Pacific countries to protect fisheries resources and ensure the region’s oceans remain safe and secure.
