A concerned relative of a patient admitted to the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital has alleged that there is a severe shortage of antibiotics at the facility.

According to the individual, patients are being prioritized for antibiotic treatment based on need, despite many requiring the medication.

The relative claimed that those seeking medical assistance at CWM Hospital should prepare to purchase antibiotics from retail pharmacies, with costs potentially running into hundreds or even thousands of dollars to complete a full antibiotic cycle.

The shortage is reportedly not limited to antibiotics, as basic essential medications such as Omeprazole, commonly used for gastric relief, are also allegedly unavailable.

Describing the situation as a "total disaster and nightmare," the relative highlighted the significant burden this places on patients and their families.

The alleged shortages have raised serious concerns about access to basic healthcare for the people of Fiji.
