Bainivalu Engages Tuvalu to Tackle PAFCO Fish Shortage
FIJI NEWS

In response to a fish supply crisis that has disrupted operations at the Pacific Fishing Company (PAFCO) in Levuka, Fiji's Minister for Fisheries, Alitia Bainivalu, has confirmed swift action to protect jobs and secure alternative sources of tuna.
Taking to social media, Bainivalu said the shortage has already affected hundreds of workers and emphasised the human toll behind the statistics: “These are not just numbers – they are hardworking Fijians, mothers, fathers, and young people who depend on PAFCO to feed their families.”
Last Friday, Bainivalu met with officials from the Tuvalu Fisheries Department, where she said “open and productive discussions” were held to explore both short- and long-term arrangements to access tuna from Tuvalu’s waters.
“This is more than just a fisheries issue,” Bainivalu said. “It’s about protecting jobs, keeping families afloat, and supporting our economy.”
She thanked the Government and people of Tuvalu for their support and affirmed that efforts are underway to ensure this setback is temporary.
