US President Joe Biden urged President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday to reconsider his proposed 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, warning that the move could harm relations with two of America’s closest allies.

“I hope he rethinks it. I think it’s counterproductive,” Biden said during a Thanksgiving visit with first responders.

He emphasized the importance of strong ties with North American neighbors, adding, “The last thing we need is to jeopardize those relationships.”

Trump, set to take office on January 20 after his November 5 victory, has proposed tariffs to pressure Canada and Mexico on issues like illegal migration and fentanyl trafficking.

Critics warn that such measures could raise prices for U.S. consumers, while Trump’s supporters argue they’re effective for securing concessions.

Biden expressed hope that Trump would reconsider, cautioning that strained alliances could set back U.S. global standing.
