The Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) is calling on the Government to provide clearer plans and communication as concerns grow over the ongoing fuel situation.

FCEF Chief Executive Officer Edward Bernard said mixed messaging around fuel supply and pricing is undermining confidence within the private sector.

“The assurance that we have adequate fuel for 90 days and that there will be no price hike, followed by an overnight announcement of increases, is not generating confidence,” he said.

He stressed that during times of crisis, clear and precise communication is critical for both businesses and the public.

The concerns come after fuel prices increased sharply, with businesses warning of the impact on operations and planning.

FCEF President Eldon Eastgate said sudden increases — including diesel rising by up to 35 per cent and petrol by around 20 per cent — are placing significant pressure on businesses.

“An overnight increase impacts heavily on business planning and will have a direct effect on the cost of goods and services,” he said.

Eastgate added that while many businesses have contingency plans, understanding the Government’s strategy is essential to ensure continuity.

The federation acknowledged that the situation is driven by global factors, but emphasised the need for the government to maintain an environment that supports ease of doing business.

FCEF also welcomed recent steps, including the appointment of a Fuel Controller and the establishment of advisory and Cabinet-level committees, but said the private sector is still waiting for clear national plans.

It has been written to the Fuel Controller, urging that businesses be included in discussions, particularly around fuel allocation and contingency measures.

FCEF is now advising all businesses to activate their Business Continuity Plans as uncertainty continues.
