Cabinet Endorses Government Position on Constitution Review Commission Report

Cabinet has endorsed the Government’s proposed positions on recommendations contained in the Constitution Review Commission (CRC) Report.

The decision was made during the 17th Cabinet Meeting on September 22, 2026, following detailed consideration by the Cabinet Subcommittee on the Review of the Constitution.

The Subcommittee assessed the recommendations and considered their legal, policy, governance, financial and administrative implications, as well as transitional arrangements and views gathered during the public consultation process.

Among the Government’s proposed constitutional reforms is the retention of “Fijian” as the common national identity for all citizens, alongside constitutional recognition of iTaukei as “itaukeinivanua o Viti.”

The proposals also include strengthening the Bill of Rights, with greater protections for women, children, vulnerable groups and minority communities.

The Government is further proposing constitutional protection for customary land ownership, qoliqoli rights and group rights, while strengthening accountability and integrity institutions.
