Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Coordinator, Shamima Ali, has called for the immediate withdrawal of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu’s nomination for the President of Fiji.

She argues that he will not help unite the nation but will instead reinforce existing inequalities and patriarchal structures.

Ali states that the presidency should not be given to individuals associated with past coups or to those who disrespect women.

She pointed out that Ratu Naiqama has repeatedly shown misogynistic behavior, including a two-year suspension from Parliament for making offensive comments about the late Dr. Jiko Luveni, a former Speaker of the House. Recently, he also made racial remarks.

Ali questioned the government’s claim of promoting social cohesion and emphasized that the President should be someone who meets high moral and ethical standards.

She also expressed concern about discussions suggesting that only chiefs or individuals from specific regions should be nominated for the presidency.

Ali insists that the choice of President must reflect the will of the Fijian people.
