Camillo Backs Rotuma Self-Governance

Aspiring politician Abel Camillo says he has been advocating for greater self-governance for Rotuma from the beginning and has welcomed recommendations by the Constitution Review Commission on the issue.

“This is what I have been advocating,” Camillo said.

“My clan wants self-determination because Fiji neglected Rotuma from 1970.”

Camillo also told Duavata News that he is a direct descendant of Gagaj Sau Riamkau II, whom he described as Rotuma’s last King.

He said he (Camillo) is also known as Gagaj Uafta Tuilakepa III.

Camillo is currently Election Campaign Lead for the Kingdom Unite All People’s Party (KUAPP).

His comments follow recommendations by the Constitution Review Commission for a dedicated constitutional chapter for Rotuma, greater self-governance through the Rotuma Island Council and a constitutional right to initiate a self-determination process.

The Commission records that the Rotuma Island Council does not seek separation from Fiji, but seeks greater autonomy, representation and self-governance within Fiji.
