The Fiji Sugar Corporation’s 2024 Annual Report has revealed a worrying 10% increase in cane burning compared to the previous season.

This trend is affecting both farm productivity and milling efficiency, which is impacting the profits of farmers and the corporation itself.

The report highlights the urgent need for changes in crop management practices and strong policies to significantly reduce cane burning within a set time frame.

The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji, Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Vinesh Kumar stated that about 30% of the sugar cane sent to major mills is burnt.

The FSC is urging local communities to report any suspicious activities related to cane burning. Those caught committing these acts will face strict legal consequences.
