Chanel Urges Collaboration with SPCA and Animal Welfare Groups

The organiser of the Fiji Royale Dog Show and acting editor of Duavata News, Arnold Chanel, has called for greater collaboration with frontline animal welfare organisations in the fight against animal cruelty.
In light of the recent rescue of a dog named Romeo — a case that sparked widespread outrage across the country — Chanel urged leaders and the public to work hand-in-hand with experienced groups such as SPCA Fiji Islands, Animals Fiji, and other long-standing animal welfare advocates.
“Real progress in protecting animals doesn’t come from social media proclamations or reading laws on camera,” Chanel said. “It comes from working alongside those who have been on the ground for years, rescuing and rehabilitating animals with little fanfare and even less funding.”
Chanel noted that conversations are ongoing with those in authority — including government ministers — on ways to improve enforcement, regulate breeders, and allocate proper funding through the upcoming National Budget.
"We are actively having discussions with national leaders on how to tackle this critical issue."
He emphasised that enforcement is not a one-step fix, but a long-term effort requiring resources, coordination, and education across the country.
“Cruelty is widespread and systemic — tackling it means empowering those already doing the work. We need to support organisations like SPCA, not just with words, but with policies, partnerships, and funding,” he added.
