Chaudhry Says PM’s Address Lacked Concrete Solutions
FIJI NEWS

Fiji Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry claims the Prime Minister’s recent national address failed to provide practical solutions to the challenges facing ordinary Fijians, describing it as overly broad and lacking in clear direction.
In a statement, Mr Chaudhry said while calls for unity are important, they must be supported by concrete policies that address the rising cost of living and pressure on public services.
He claims Fiji’s current economic vulnerability is partly the result of policy gaps, particularly in areas such as food and energy security, where he says greater emphasis was outlined in the Fiji Labour Party’s 2022 manifesto.
Mr Chaudhry pointed to proposals such as a fuel stabilisation fund, investment in renewable energy, and measures to reduce reliance on imports, which he said could have helped cushion the impact of global economic pressures.
He also raised concerns about key sectors, including agriculture, claiming that issues such as land lease renewals, challenges in the rice and copra industries, and delays in payments to sugarcane farmers remain unresolved.
Mr Chaudhry further claims that while global factors are affecting fuel prices and supply chains, there is still scope for domestic policy adjustments, including targeted tax relief and better prioritisation of government spending to ease the burden on families.
On governance, he questioned the consistency of government messaging, including its position on constitutional matters and engagement with public submissions.
Mr Chaudhry said leadership requires sustained action and planning, adding that Fijians are looking for accountability and practical measures that directly improve livelihoods.
He said the Fiji Labour Party will continue to advocate for policies that prioritise the needs of ordinary citizens.
