Children Are Not Cheap Labour Says PS Nemani
FIJI NEWSTOP STORIES

Children belong in classrooms, not trapped in labour that steals their education, wellbeing, and future opportunities, says Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Mr Jone Maritino Nemani.
Ahead of World Day Against Child Labour on June 12, Mr Nemani issued a blunt warning to families, employers, and communities across Fiji, saying financial hardship can never justify exposing children to exploitative or harmful work.
“Children deserve a childhood. They deserve education, safety, care, and the chance to build a better future for themselves,” Mr Nemani said.
“Too often, children end up carrying burdens that should never belong to them. When a child’s schooling, health, or development is sacrificed because they are forced into labour, we are depriving that child of their future.”
Mr Nemani acknowledged that many families are struggling financially, particularly due to rising global economic pressures linked to international conflicts and instability, but stressed that children should never pay the price for adult problems.
“There is a major difference between teaching children responsibility and exposing them to exploitation,” he said.
“There is nothing wrong with children learning discipline or helping families in safe and appropriate ways. But once work starts affecting their education, grades, safety, health, or overall development, it becomes unacceptable.”
Mr Nemani said employers also carry both a legal and moral obligation to protect children.
“A child is not cheap labour. Every child has potential. They are future teachers, nurses, tradespeople, leaders, and professionals who deserve the opportunity to grow and succeed.”
The Ministry is urging members of the public to report cases where children may be exposed to dangerous, exploitative, or inappropriate forms of labour.
“Protecting children is everyone’s responsibility. When we fail our children, we fail the future of Fiji itself,” Mr Nemani said.
