China has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with Fiji, pledging continued support for the island nation’s development, climate resilience, and economic growth.
Speaking at a media briefing following China’s annual “Two Sessions” political meetings, the Chinese Ambassador to Fiji highlighted China’s role as a stabilizing force in global affairs, emphasizing its dedication to peace, multilateral cooperation, and economic partnerships.
He underscored China’s support for Fiji’s development, pointing to ongoing projects such as the Vanua Levu Road Upgrading Project and the construction of two new jetties in Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
China is also working with Fiji to establish direct flights and enhance poverty reduction initiatives.
“China and Fiji are both members of the Global South, and we share a common goal of development and revitalization,” the Ambassador said. “Our cooperation will continue to bring tangible benefits to our peoples.”
The speech also reaffirmed China’s commitment to climate change mitigation, a key concern for Pacific Island nations.
The ambassador announced that China would continue to provide assistance through the China-Pacific Island Countries Climate Change Cooperation Center, supplying renewable energy solutions such as solar power systems and electric vehicles.
On the global stage, China positioned itself as a champion of multilateralism, calling for a more equitable international system and reaffirming its commitment to the United Nations.
The ambassador stressed China’s opposition to protectionism and unilateralism, advocating for free trade and economic inclusivity.
China’s position on Taiwan was also a key part of the speech, with the ambassador urging Fiji to maintain its adherence to the “one-China” policy and discouraging local organizations from engaging with pro-independence activities.
Marking 50 years of diplomatic relations, China and Fiji are set to deepen their strategic partnership, with an emphasis on trade, infrastructure, climate resilience, and cultural exchange.
“We must have the courage to forge ahead despite difficulties,” the ambassador concluded, quoting a popular Chinese film. “China and Fiji will continue shaping their future together.”
