In a recent statement, the Chinese Embassy in Fiji attempted to assure the Pacific that their aid comes with “no strings attached.”

Responding to Prime Minister Rabuka's earlier statement that no Chinese bases would be allowed in Fiji, the Embassy stated that they have no strings attached to the aid they are giving Fiji and that they do not want a base in Fiji.

Yet, in the same media statement, they reminded everyone of the One-China policy and the importance of not engaging with Taiwan in Fiji — which is, quite literally, a string.

"China has no interest in geopolitical competition or seeking the so-called 'sphere of influence.' There are no political strings attached to China’s assistance, no imposing one’s will onto others, and no empty promises," the statement read.

However, the statement then goes on to say: "China firmly opposes 'Taiwan independence' in all forms and commits to realizing national reunification. This position was reiterated at the third China–Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in May and gained wide understanding and support from participating countries, including Fiji."

The message: “We’re all about friendship and cooperation — but just remember who you can and can’t be friends with.”

Taiwan is a self-governing, democratic nation of over 23 million people, with its own elected government, vibrant economy, and independent institutions. Despite China’s ongoing claims over its sovereignty the majority of Taiwanese people object to being owned by China.
