Chinese Workers Found Slavery in Brazil
WORLD

Authorities in Brazil have rescued 163 Chinese workers allegedly subjected to "slavery-like conditions" at a construction site for electric vehicle giant BYD in Camacari, Bahia.
The workers, reportedly employed by contractor Jinjiang Group, were relocated to local hotels as investigations into potential human trafficking and labor violations unfold.
Dormitory inspections revealed poor living conditions, including beds without mattresses and rudimentary kitchens.
BYD (Build Your Dreams), a Chinese multinational company, is one of the world’s largest producers of electric vehicles (EVs) and is also involved in manufacturing batteries, energy storage systems, and solar power products.
The company announced it would terminate its contract with the contractor but dismissed the allegations as a smear campaign against Chinese brands.
The prosecutor’s office has yet to confirm charges, while the workers’ legal status and current whereabouts remain unclear.
