The Ministry of Forestry clarified its role in the Cogea Relocation Project, which was initiated to rehabilitate Cogea Village after the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Yasa.

The Ministry emphasized its significant contributions to the project, including processing timber for 10 houses.

This was achieved using portable sawmills and mahogany logs supplied by the Fiji Hardwood Corporation Limited (FHCL).

Additionally, the Ministry partnered with the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) to train chainsaw operators, empowering local community members and building skills essential for the project’s success.

A key challenge highlighted by the Ministry was the necessity of aligning timber processing with construction timelines to avoid wastage.

Mahogany timber, in particular, is vulnerable to damage when exposed to the elements, underlining the importance of timely construction efforts.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Cogea Village’s relocation and ensuring that resources are utilized efficiently to achieve sustainable outcomes for the community.
