The Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, yesterday recognized the efforts of the Fiji Detector Dog Unit’s (DFDDU) K9 Tiny and her handler for their role in the successful detection of methamphetamine in December 2024.
K9 Tiny was commended for her persistence and determination, which were instrumental in the operation.
The Commissioner also acknowledged the joint efforts of the DFDDU, Police Dog Unit, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, and New Zealand Police in enhancing operational effectiveness in the fight against drugs and other illicit activities.
From July 2023 to January 2025, the Unit made 417 seizures and 363 arrests, with the highest number of seizures for marijuana, followed by methamphetamine and cocaine.
The Commissioner emphasized the need for aggressive action and persistence in combating the illicit drug trade, urging the units to be forward-thinking and vocal about their operational needs.
The Fiji Detector Dog Unit program is a partnership supported by the New Zealand Government, aimed at enhancing detector dog capabilities through training and provision of K9s.
