Sue Matai, a concerned parent and teacher, has raised significant concerns about the appropriateness of the content being taught to Year 4 students.
Matai's son, who is 9 years old, recently brought home a homework assignment that included a story with themes and language she believes are unsuitable for children of this age group.
Matai expressed her surprise and concern over the story's content, which included themes of violence and threats.
She questioned the relevance of such material for young children, emphasizing that many students at this level are still struggling with basic reading and comprehension skills.
"My son is a fast reader and learner and we know he can cope, but how about his classmates or other students out there who are still trying to identify basic Dolch words?" Matai stated.
She advocates for comprehension passages that focus on promoting healthy living, moral values, and acceptable behaviors, which she believes are more appropriate and beneficial for children at this developmental stage.
Matai's concerns highlight the need for careful consideration of the content being introduced to young students to ensure it supports their growth and learning in a positive and age-appropriate manner.
