Concerns Over Fairness in Fiji’s Judicial System
FIJI NEWS

There is growing concern in Fiji about fairness and justice in the country’s legal system. Questions have been raised about the actions of the Barbara Malimali Commission of Inquiry (COI) and the response from the Judicial Services Commission (JSC).
The JSC recently made a statement about matters involving Christopher Pryde and Barbara Malimali. It said it is committed to fairness and integrity, but some people, including Hon. Jone Usamate, believe this is not the case.
One major issue is the COI calling in The Fiji Times editor and a journalist over a story published on January 3rd.
The COI accused them of spreading false information about Janet Mason and her law firm in New Zealand. Some believe this is an attempt to silence or discredit her.
Another concern is whether the Minister for Justice asked for the names of people who made complaints against him.
The recent removal of FICAC Manager Investigations, Kulianiasi Saumi, has also raised questions. Some fear this could discourage other witnesses from coming forward in the inquiry.
Hon. Usamate says the JSC must do its job and recommend Malimali’s suspension to the President. He warns that if the JSC does nothing, people may lose trust in the legal system.
Many are now asking: Is justice being served, or is political power getting in the way?
