Concerns Over Overtime Pay for Radiology and Pharmacy Staff

There are growing concerns from the public after the Ministry of Health announced that radiology and pharmacy services at government hospitals and health centres will close at 4:30pm.
This decision follows a recent directive from the Ministry of Civil Service.
The Ministry of Health is currently awaiting a response from the Ministry of Civil Service, which is expected by later today or tomorrow.
The Ministry of Health hopes that the new policy can be adjusted to ensure that staff in the radiology and pharmacy departments receive proper compensation for overtime, rather than just time off in lieu.
Permanent Secretary for Health, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, explained that they have submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Civil Service, asking them to reconsider the policy due to a shortage of staff.
He stated that they have already met with officials from the Civil Service Ministry and are hopeful for a response soon.
Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, Parmesh Chand, confirmed that the Health Ministry is asking for an exemption for Band F staff, particularly those with specialized skills, so they can be paid for overtime work.
Chand acknowledged that the work done by these staff members is essential for healthcare services and said they are open to finding a solution.
Chand also emphasized the importance of work-life balance, noting that time off in lieu should always be available to staff.
However, he recognized the challenge of staff shortages and the need for extra hours to meet healthcare demands.
Both ministries are working to resolve the issue and hope to reach a solution in the coming days.
