Creators of the Constitution Abandoned Their Own Party – Sharma

Independent Member of Parliament Rinesh Sharma has defended his decision to support the suspension of Standing Orders SO 6(5) and SO 92(1)(d), stating that it allows the government to debate its proposed constitutional amendments.
Sharma emphasized that he remains open to discussions but will only vote for changes if the core principles of the 2013 Constitution remain intact.
“My bargain is clear—I will only support an amendment if the foundation of the 2013 Constitution remains, including non-discrimination, equality, fundamental human rights, and the recognition of 'Fijian' as a nationality,” Sharma stated.
However, he expressed concerns about the current Constitution, arguing that while it is “90% fair,” the remaining 10% grants excessive power to the government and the Attorney-General. “A wrong person in the position of AG can be detrimental to any society,” he warned, calling for stronger checks and balances.
Sharma also criticized the original architects of the 2013 Constitution, pointing out that many of them have since abandoned their party, referring to the former Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum
“If they had remained, the 26 FFP MPs would have been united, and so would the 2013 Constitution,” he remarked, highlighting his disappointment in the political shifts within the opposition.
Despite speculation about his stance, Sharma reaffirmed his independence and commitment to ensuring that any constitutional amendments serve all Fijians.
“If my vote has a chance of keeping the foundation of our Constitution intact, why not?” he concluded.
Social media users were, however, quick to point out that if the bill passes, it would reduce the threshold for constitutional changes from 75% to 66%—a number the coalition government already holds. This would effectively mean Sharma’s vote would no longer be necessary for future amendments.
“He is naively taking himself out of the process,” one social media user commented.
