The Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital Redevelopment Project has entered a key phase with the launch of its Clinical Services Plan, setting the stage for major upgrades and a long-term transformation of the country’s largest public hospital.
The launch was officiated yesterday by Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, who confirmed that a master-planning team began work last week.
The team is now collaborating closely with CWM’s clinical and management teams to design a modern, patient-centered facility.
Dr. Lalabalavu said that the public can soon expect to see critical upgrades around the hospital, including roof repairs and an overhaul of the water supply system, which are essential to maintain hospital operations while planning for the new facility progresses.
“These are interim but essential improvements, and they form part of Australia’s Priority Infrastructure Plan, which was initiated earlier this year with support from the Prime Minister and Australia’s former High Commissioner,” he said.
The Minister also extended congratulations to Senator Penny Wong and the Australian Labor Party on her re-election, thanking Australia for its continued commitment to the Vuvale Partnership, which he said reflects “shared values and common goals.”
In a significant boost to public health, Senator Wong, who also serves as Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, announced a FJ$5.7 million commitment to support Fiji’s HIV Response Plan. The funding will enhance disease surveillance, testing, and prevention programs, with an emphasis on community-led initiatives.
“This support is timely and aligns with our strategic public health goals,” Dr. Lalabalavu said.
