Fiji is on high alert as Tropical Depression 09F, currently 255km northeast of Cikobia and 290km northeast of Udu Point, is expected to intensify into a tropical cyclone within the next 12 to 18 hours and track southward towards Fiji.

The Eastern Division, including Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Cikobia, Naqele Levu, Lau, and Lomaiviti Groups, will be the first to experience severe impacts, with a Gale Warning in place as winds are forecasted to reach 90km/h by tonight. A Heavy Rain Warning remains in force for the Northern Division, Lau, and Lomaiviti Groups, with risks of localized flooding, river overflows, and road closures.

Strong winds of up to 65km/h with gusts of 90km/h are also expected for parts of Viti Levu, Yasawa, Mamanuca, and Kadavu, where a Strong Wind Warning has been issued.

Authorities warn that rough to very rough seas, coastal flooding, and disruptions to power and communication networks are likely, urging residents to prepare and avoid unnecessary travel.

The Fiji Meteorological Service expects the system to enter Fiji waters later today, with worsening conditions overnight.
