Deadly Leptospirosis Outbreak Across Fiji
FIJI NEWSTOP STORIES

Our sources from the medical sector have raised alarm over a deadly leptospirosis outbreak affecting parts of Fiji, with cases reported across Viti Levu, with one teenager already dead from the infection.
The Ministry of Health and Medical Services confirmed that three teenagers were admitted to health facilities in the Suva area last week, all of whom had reportedly been swimming at Colo-i-Suva.
Tavua is understood to be among the worst-affected areas.
Health sources have told Duavata News that medical facilities are seeing a growing number of patients presenting with symptoms consistent with the bacterial disease, which spreads through water or soil contaminated by animal urine.
Sources tell us the West is currently experiencing a significant number of infections, while cases have also been reported in central areas.
Leptospirosis can cause severe illness and may be fatal if not treated early. It especially hits children hard.
Symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting, and weakness, with serious cases leading to organ complications.
The public is advised to:
- Avoid contact with potentially contaminated water,
- Cover open wounds,
- Maintain proper hygiene, and
- Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms develop.
Duavata News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
