After more than 40 years of relying on unsafe water sources, the communities of Vusama and Navisabasaba in the Malomalo district of Nadroga are finally enjoying the benefits of clean, running water—thanks to a newly commissioned $3.4 million water project.

The project, officially launched recently, has brought immense relief to the villagers, many of whom have struggled for decades with limited and unreliable access to safe drinking water.

Turaga-ni-Koro of Navisabasaba, Emoni Rokomoce, described the moment clean water began flowing from taps as life-changing.

“This is something our village has worked towards for over forty years,” he said. “To finally see it happen is overwhelming. We are deeply grateful to the Government for making this possible.”

For years, villagers relied on wells and rainwater tanks, especially after traditional sources became contaminated.

In Vusama village, where 57 households were affected, the situation had become particularly dire.

“We used to drink from a well, but when it became too dirty, we turned to water tanks provided by the Government,” said Vusama’s Turaga-ni-Koro, Veniyasi Sokolevu. “Now, with this new water system, everything has changed.”

He said the improvements have already been felt—especially among children.

“There’s been a noticeable decline in skin infections and other waterborne diseases. Our children are healthier, and our families feel safer,” Mr. Sokolevu added.

Both communities extended heartfelt thanks to the Government, noting that access to clean water has not only improved health and hygiene but also brought dignity and hope to their daily lives.
