Dentistry Community Mourns Loss of Dr Yogendra Chand

The dental community is mourning the loss of respected senior dentist Dr Yogendra Chand, whose funeral was held today, drawing colleagues from across Fiji to pay their final respects.

Dr Chand, who hailed from the Olosara area of Sigatoka, was widely regarded as a dedicated dental professional whose decades of service earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues, patients and the wider community.

Senior dentists travelled from across the country to honour his life, including Dr Anand Sagar, Prem Chand Lal of Labasa and Master Jwala, reflecting the profound impact Dr Chand had on Fiji's dental profession.

Speaking on behalf of the Fiji Dental Association and the Fiji Oral Health Workers Association, Dr Joan Lal described Dr Chand as one of the most knowledgeable dentists in the profession.

She said his passing had left a significant void in Fiji's dental community and that his dedication, professionalism and willingness to mentor others would be deeply missed.

Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Penioni Ravunawa, himself a registered dental practitioner (Therapist) and Director of Daily Care Dental Clinic in Suva delivered an emotional tribute, describing Dr Chand as "my dear brother and friend."

"Thank you for your friendship, your service, and the lasting impact you have left on all of us. You will always be remembered with respect, gratitude, and affection," Dr Ravunawa said.

He said Dr Chand's contribution extended far beyond dentistry.

"Today, we honour not only a distinguished public servant, but also a loving husband, a devoted father, a proud grandfather, a caring uncle, and a man whose life was dedicated to serving others."

Speaking personally, Dr Ravunawa said Dr Chand was much more than a colleague.

"He was my brother and a dear friend. I will deeply miss his wisdom, kindness, humility and unwavering commitment to helping people. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the values he demonstrated every day."

The large turnout of fellow dental professionals at today's funeral served as a fitting tribute to a man whose life was defined by compassion, service and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others.

His passing leaves not only a void within the profession, but also a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of dentists in Fiji.
