Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, attended a Bhojpuri Folk Dance Group event at the University of the South Pacific, hosted by the Indian High Commission and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre.
In a statement, Professor Prasad expressed gratitude to His Excellency Suneet Mehta and the Government of India for their continued cultural engagement and support. He described the performance, led by Mr. Rakesh Upadhyay, as a powerful tribute to Fiji’s Girmitiya heritage, highlighting the strength, resilience, and cultural richness of Indo-Fijian forebears.
He also acknowledged India’s ongoing support through programmes such as the ICCR scholarships, ITEC, and the Know India Programme, noting their role in empowering youth and enhancing bilateral ties.
“As we honour our shared history, we also look to the future—one rooted in unity, peace, and cultural understanding,” he said.
