The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Biman Prasad, visited Kadavu this week for a two-day official tour, where he engaged with civil servants and local communities to gain a better understanding of their challenges and opportunities.
The delegation, which included Attorney General Hon. Graham Leung, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Lenora Qereqeretabua, and Assistant Minister for Public Works & Transport Hon. Naisa Tuinaceva, made stops at Vunisea Hospital and Vunisea Secondary School. They also held talanoa sessions with villagers from Tavuki, Naqalotu, Daviqele, and Muani.
During the visit, several pressing issues were raised, including concerns about staff retention, the need for more accommodation for civil servants, and the demand for seawalls to mitigate the impact of climate change.
In response, DPM Prasad assured that additional funding would be allocated in the upcoming budget to address these issues and to support sustainable development on the island. He also emphasized that Kadavu holds significant potential, particularly in the tourism and agriculture sectors, and that the government is committed to enhancing economic opportunities for the region.
