Dialogue Fiji has expressed support for the government's decision to distribute Public Service Broadcast (PSB) funding among multiple media operators.

This move aims to create a more sustainable and diverse media landscape in Fiji.

Nilesh Lal, Executive Director of Dialogue Fiji, highlighted the importance of sharing public funds in a small media market with limited advertising revenue.

He noted that previous government policies had favored the state broadcaster, Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), often at the expense of private media companies.

This led to challenges for independent players like Fiji Television, CFL, and The Fiji Times.

While Lal commended the equitable distribution of PSB funding, he stressed the need for FBC to continue receiving adequate financial support to maintain its role as a credible state broadcaster.

He also emphasized the importance of editorial independence for media organizations receiving state funding, ensuring they can report critically on government policies without fear of repercussions.

This initiative is seen as a step towards a balanced and competitive media industry that better serves the public interest in Fiji.
