As Fiji joins the global celebration of Diwali today, Sanatan Dharam President Dhirendra Nand is urging communities to not only revel in the festival of lights but also to confront pressing social issues facing the nation.

Diwali, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness, sees a vibrant display of unity among Fijians from diverse backgrounds.

In his Diwali message, Nand highlights the importance of collective action in addressing critical challenges that impact the country's youth, including rising drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, and an alarming increase in HIV and AIDS cases.

“A lot of challenges are facing our youth, such as drug-related issues and street kids.

Recently, we have seen a concerning rise in the number of HIV and AIDS victims in our country,” Nand stated.

He emphasized that Diwali is not just a time for celebration but also an opportunity for raising awareness and working together to support those in need.

Nand also calls for a sustainable Diwali, urging people to take action to protect the environment and maintain cleanliness in public spaces.

This plea is particularly relevant as Fiji confronts the impacts of climate change.

As the five-day festival unfolds with its various rituals and celebrations, Nand encourages everyone to let this Diwali be a moment for reflection and action, aimed at building a brighter future for all Fijians.
