$739,000 Multipurpose Evacuation Centre to Be Built in Maumi Village

A new $739,000 multipurpose evacuation centre will be constructed in Maumi Village, Dravo, Tailevu, providing a vital safety shelter for residents during natural disasters and emergencies.
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, officiated the groundbreaking ceremony yesterday, highlighting the centre’s role in protecting vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly, and disabled persons.
The project, funded through a collaboration between the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Government of Korea, will also serve as a business incubation space for the community.
Minister Ditoka acknowledged the support of partner organizations, including Save the Children, which will provide training on disaster resilience and child protection.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to community development and climate resilience, emphasizing the need for unity during disasters.
The new facility will cater not only to Maumi residents but also to nearby communities in times of crisis.
