Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Hon. Viliame Gavoka has reaffirmed the importance of the tourism sector in driving Fiji’s economic growth, despite recent short-term setbacks in visitor arrivals.

Speaking at the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Forum, themed “Fiji’s Economic Preview – The Next Fiscal Budget and Beyond”, DPM Gavoka said the tourism industry continues to be a major pillar of the national economy.

“Tourism has been fuelling our economy, with Fiji welcoming one million visitors by air and sea in 2024,” he said.

However, Gavoka acknowledged a 5.3% decline in arrivals during the first quarter of the year (January to March), underscoring the need for continuous innovation and strategic planning.

“This is why we need to continuously be innovative, accelerate investments, remove red tape, and think long-term about our product differentiation,” he said.

Despite the dip in early-year figures, Gavoka noted that the industry remains strong and resilient, with encouraging results and positive momentum heading into the rest of the year.
