Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad has called for an International Day on Girmit, urging global recognition of the struggles of indentured Indian laborers (girmitya).
Speaking at the University of Calcutta via Viber, Professor Prasad highlighted the brutal conditions faced by over a million Indians taken to British colonies, including 60,000 to Fiji.
“As with slavery, the time for an International Day on Girmit has arrived,” he stated, urging UN action.
He also called on businesses that profited from the indenture system to acknowledge their past.
Praising India’s efforts to preserve Girmit history, DPM Prasad reflected on Fiji-India ties and his personal connection to the cause.
